Academic Year
Germany. Graduate and Postdoctoral Fellowships. The Leo Baeck Fellowship Program fosters research on the history and culture of German-speaking Jewry in Central Europe and in exile. There are a maximum of 12 PhD scholarships and 2 post-doctoral scholarships available for the 2007-08 academic year (October 2007 to September 2008). The scholarships shall enable the fellows to do their research both at home and at chosen research institutes and archives. As part of the program, regular exchange with other scholars in the field is encouraged through seminars. The scholarships for PhD students are €1,000 per month in Europe, €1,200 in the UK and in Israel, and €1,400 in the US. Postdoctoral students receive €1,500, €1 800 (UK, Israel), €2,100 (US). Summer Program: Conflict Management in the Balkans
The Conflict Management in the Balkans Program offers an amazing opportunity to examine past conflicts and consequences firsthand. This fully-accredited summer program is ideal for students of international relations, political science, Slavic studies, and anyone interested in peace and justice. The Balkans will be your classroom as you learn from eminent academics and experts, representatives from NATO/UN/OSCE and other key intergovernmental organizations, as well as from people who have lived through these conflicts.
Program Highlights:
- Study Tour to past flashpoints of conflict like Vukovar, Sarajevo, Mostar, and Brcko
- Conflict Seminar of stimulating lectures, discussions and site visits
- Excellent teaching, library and computing facilities
- Site visits to state agencies, intergovernmental organizations and NGOs

- Exciting musical and cultural festivals

The Summer 2008 program begins 14th June and will finish on 6th July. Optional UN seminars on Peacekeeping in the Former Yugoslavia as well as Global Terrorism will follow immediately afterwards.
Applications are due 31st March although students hoping to secure one of our scholarships should apply well before this date.
This program is hosted and accredited by the Faculty of Social Sciences (FDV) at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia’s largest and most prestigious university. FDV is housed in a modern facility with electronically equipped lecture rooms, a research library, cafeteria and outdoor café. All lectures will be taught in English.

CLI Language Courses
In 2008, the Arizona State University Critical Languages Institute (CLI) will offer 8-week, 8-credit intensive language courses in:
- Albanian (elementary, intermediate, advanced)
- Armenian (elementary and intermediate)
- Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (elementary and intermediate)
- Macedonian (elementary and intermediate)
- Polish (elementary)
- Russian (elementary and intermediate)
- Tajik (elementary)
- Tatar (elementary and intermediate)
- Ukrainian (elementary)
- Uzbek (elementary and intermediate)
This year the CLI will be held June 2 - July 25, 2008 on the Tempe campus of Arizona State University.
Our 6-credit Advanced Mastery Albanian course will be offered in the evenings from June 16 to July 25.

All classes are tuition–free. The only cost for the course is a $400 registration fee.

After the course in Tempe, students of Albanian, Armenian, BCS, Macedonian, Polish, and Tatar can continue their language and culture studies on special three-week study abroad programs in Tirana, Yerevan, Sarajevo, Ohrid, Poznan, and Kazan. These programs will run from July 28-August 15, 2008.
The study abroad programs are open to eligible students who did not participate in the courses at ASU.
