ANNO - AustriaN Newspapers Online (Historische österreichische Zeitungen und Zeitschriften Online) is a new virtual newspaper reading room established by the Austrian National Library. As of early October 2003, it already had more than 350,000 pages of historical Austrian (Habsburg monarchy) newspapers from 1780 - 1938, with 40,000 pages being added every week. German.

Austrian Cultural Archive. On this website you will find information about activities, projects, publications, resources centers and many links. There is also a "kulturinformationsdienst" (in German only). This cultural information service is a weekly collection and synopsis of articles, contributions and analyses of art and cultural policy in Austria and Europe. Austrian Church Archives. This is the access portal to the archives of the Catholic Church in Austria, including the inventories of several regional depositories, information on Church history, and current Church-related events. Choice of German or English.
Bibliotheca Eruditionis is a database of old Hungarian books and history of Hungarian civilization in the 16-17th centuries. The overall aim of the project is to rediscover what books existed in the Carpathian basin during the 16th and 17th centuries. The compilation of the reading material is entitled "Old Hungarian Prints; a Virtual Library." Within the frame of the project they intend to digitize a 16th- 17th-century national bibliography. The database encompasses three parts:
- Bibliographic descriptions augmented with the full list of provenance
- History of different editions
- Cover photos, recommendations and prefaces of different editions (in the second phase they intend to show the items in their entirety)

The European Centre for Minority Issues (ECMI) conducts practice-oriented research, provides information and documentation, and offers advisory services concerning minority-majority relations in Europe. It serves European governments and regional intergovernmental organizations as well as non-dominant groups in the European area. Hill Monastic Manuscript Library in Collegeville, MN. The most comprehensive collection of microfilmed medieval and early modern Austrian manuscripts outside of Austria. English.
Integrated History, launched in fall 2005, Integrated History is a website maintained by Cornell University featuring primary sources in English relating to East-Central European history. The site is administered through Cornell's Institute for European Studies and the Einaudi Center. English.
Klosterbibliotheken in Österreich A study of the monastic libraries in Austria with links to the Kommission Österreichischer Theologischer Spezialbibliotheken and other items of interest. German.
MCH Commission for Mass Communication History / Kommission für historische Pressedokumentation, run by the Austrian Academy of the Sciences, gives links to a database of daily newspapers in inter-war Vienna and Berlin. German and English.
Monasterium. Virtuelles Urkundenarchiv niederosterreichischer Kloster. A developing site projected to include up to 20,000 medieval documents from the monasteries of Lower Austria. German, English, Czech, Slovene, Hungarian, Slovak, Croatian, or Italian.
"Österreichische Verlagsgeschichte 1918-1938" A history of Austrian publishing by Dr. Murray G. Hall (Böhlau Verlag, 1985) that has been out of print for years and available only through antiquarian channels. The Wiener Stadt- und Landesbibliothek, together with the author, have arranged to make the text available in an Internet version identical with the original text.
You can get to this version via the Wiener Stadt- und Landesbibliothek website or directly via the link above. Full-text search capabilities guide you to individual publishing houses, historical events, and so forth. An added bonus is the link-to-holdings feature that can take you, publisher by publisher, to the online catalog for those works held in the Wiener Stadt- und Landesbibliothek.

Wiener Stadt- und LandesbibliothekAn online collection that includes an important stock of autograph manuscripts concerning Austrian history since the late 18th century. Its focus is on a collection of letters and writings and more than 500,000 single autograph documents relating to Austrian literature of the 19th and 20th centuries. Authors include Franz Grillparzer, Ferdinand Raimund, Johann Nestroy, Anastasius Grün, Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, Ferdinand von Saar, Ludwig Anzengruber, Karl Kraus, Hans Weigel, Friedrich Torberg, Gerhard Fritsch, H. Electronic Journals on Central Europe
As the Internet expanded, a number of journals that deal with Central, East Central, and Southeastern Europe began to publish online either as an outgrowth of their "hard copy" forums or exclusively in cyberspace. That trend has hardly abated; in fact, more journals appear every year. The journals listed below are the ones whose editors or users have notified us and by no means should be considered a comprehensive list.
Balkanistica Revived by SEESA, the Southeast European Studies Association (formerly the Association for Southeast European Studies) Balkanistica is an interdisciplinary journal dealing with Balkan and Southeast European topics. English.
Bridges is an online newsletter from the Office of Science and Technology (OST) at the Austrian Embassy in Washington. Its subjects are science and technology history, policy, and new technological developments in Austria and North America. Its mission statement states, it is "building bridges of knowledge and expertise between Austria and North America." English.
Central Europe Review. CER has been incorporated into the online magazine TOL and is now its culture section. Primarily high quality journalism—think The Economist exclusively covering Central, East Central, and Southeastern Europe—and therefore contains information that both academics and nonacademics will appreciate. It's based at Oxford University. English.
COMPASS. An online review launched by an interdiscplinary group of graduate students in the field of Austrian and Central European Studies at the University of Oxford. Conceived as a forum and aid for graduate research. English.
Intermarium An online journal for noteworthy scholarship and provocative thinking about the history and politics of Central and Eastern Europe following World War II. It aims to broaden the discourse on aspects of national histories that are undergoing change thanks to the availability of new documentation from recently opened archives. Its name, Intermarium, reflects East Central Europe's geographic location between the seas: Baltic, Adriatic and Black.
The editors will facilitate interaction between scholarly communities by making research, essays, commentaries, documents, and reviews from the region available in English. The journal is a project of the Institute of Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Columbia University's East Central European Center. English.
REGIO : Minorities, Politics, Society is an academic journal published by the Teleki Laszlo Institute in Budapest, Hungary. REGIO appears quarterly in the Hungarian language, and annually in English. The site is in Hungarian, but the downloadable PDF files of the journal are in English.
Religion and Society in Eastern and Central Europe is an electronic journal sponsored by the International Study of Religion in Eastern and Central Europe Association (ISORECEA) that receives collaborative support from West Virginia University and the University of Szeged in Hungary. All links here are to sites in English, including the University of Szeged.
Sehepunkte. A review journal and newsletter concerning works on a wide range of topics in European history, with a focus on the German-speaking lands. Clicking the Inhaltsverzeichnis button on the homepage will access the current reviews, which are updated monthly. German.
Slavic Review. The electronic variant of the journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies (see "Scholarly Societies," below). It includes Russian, Eurasian, and East European studies. The site includes electronic post-print editions since the Fall 1994 issue. English.
ViVa A women's history database and current bibliography of women's and gender history. Articles published in English, French, German, and Dutch are selected from more than a hundred European, North American, and Indian academic journals. The ViVa database now contains bibliographic records describing more then 5400 articles published between 1975 and 2000. The site is in English and Dutch.
Vreme NDA. Vreme has been a respected independent newsmagazine in Belgrade, Serbia since October 1990. Rutgers University maintains an English digest for 1991-1997. The magazine is still publishing, and is available online at http://www.vreme.com/ in Serbian.
Electronic Discussion Groups
Like the "electronic journals" the increased popularity of these email discussion groups is a product of the recent Internet boom. These electronic discussion groups provide an informal environment for discussion both in historical research and contemporary issues.
HABSBURG List Homepage. HABSBURG is one of several internet forums available through H-Net. It offers moderated discussion forums, book reviews, course syllabi, and more. The HABSBURG home page also offers links to several other H-Net discussion groups, but check out the main H-Net website for even more information on a wide variety of internet forums relating to the arts and humanities.
H-Germanistik A new H-Net Network on German Literature and Philology. H-Germanistik is designed to provide a platform for German Literature Studies. Its aim is to serve the exchange of information on German literature from the Middle Ages to the present time. It includes interdisciplinary information on German literature by inviting perspectives from Comparative Literature, Cultural Studies, Postcolonial Studies, and related disciplines. German.
Museums
The Albertina Museum Located in Vienna, this museum offers online access to collections and extensive documentation of photography and graphic arts in Austria.
MuseumsQuartier Wien (MQ). Vienna’s internationally renowned group of new museums and collections opened in 2001 and was an instant success with art and architecture critics and with the public. Three modern buildings are enclosed within the former Habsburg royal riding stables, adjacent to the Kunsthistorisches Museum and Naturhistorisches Museum. The website is in German and English and offers some basic information in French, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, and Russian.
United States Holocaust Memorial MuseumLocated in Washington, DC, its website includes information about the museum, about the European Holocaust, and about other instances of genocide in the world. It offers a wealth of information not only about history but also about current events, and acknowledges activism as something that can be practiced now—as opposed to something that can be merely read about. Networks
Austrian Research, United Kingdom & Ireland. This site is a portal for British and Irish based academic research in Austrian studies within the humanities. It aims to give an overview of research activity in the field, while providing tools to support the practice of such research. The site includes a quarterly guest academic editorial highlighting key trends in the field, a calendar of British and Irish events of specific interest to researchers, an open bulletin board and a discussion forum, many useful links to institutions in Britain, Ireland, and Austria, ' The Directory,' (a compendium of links relevant to the dissemination of research), and AT/UK+IE, an evolving collection of information on Austrian culture in Britain and Ireland. Central Europe Online. A subsidiary of EIN, which is a digest of thousands of newspapers from around the world. You must join as a member to access any stories, but membership is free. Like the NY Times, they will send you an electronic newsletter with headlines from the region of your choice. English.
University of Texas Russian and East European Network Information Center. Another great academic site with links to sites in the Baltic region, East and Southeast Europe, Russia and the former Soviet republics. English, though of course the language of the indeividual sites varies.

The Centre for Austrian Studies Based in the Universities of Edinburgh and Aberdeen, the Centre for Austrian Studies provides a focus for theorists and practitioners from a variety of institutions and environments to work together creatively to develop knowledge and understanding of Austrian culture. It also encourages and supports academic and cultural exchange between Britain and Austria.
The Centre collaborates with the Austrian Cultural Institute in London. Paralleling the work of the American Center for Austrian Studies at the University of Minnesota, the Centre works in close contact with institutions in Austria including the University of Vienna, the Franz Nabl Institute at the Karl-Franzens Universität, Graz, the International Research Center for Cultural Studies, Vienna, the Literaturhaus in Vienna, and the Oxford Austrian Studies Association. Founded in the fall of 1997, The Center for Austrian Culture and Commerce (CenterAustria) at the University of New Orleans enlarges upon more than two decades of cooperation with the University of Innsbruck and a Sister City Agreement between the Cities of Innsbruck and New Orleans. Center for German and European Studies (CGES), University of Minnesota. CGES is a consortium of the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities and the University of Wisconsin, Madison that promotes knowledge about Germany and Europe among established and emerging scholars, students, K–12 teachers, policymakers, business leaders and other professionals, and the general public.
Established in 1998 with funding from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the two universities, CGES is one of only five "Centers of Excellence" supported by the DAAD in the United States and the only one in the Midwest. The other four centers are at Harvard, Brandeis, Georgetown, and the University of California, Berkeley.
The research, training, and educational programs of CGES improve knowledge among teachers and students, strengthen innovative research, and yield significant economic and policy advantages. English.
Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (CHGS), University of Minnesota. CHGS was established within the College of Liberal Arts as an independent center, though it has an administrative relationship with the Department of History. It is also affiliated with The Institute for Global Studies, The Humanities Institute, Department of German, Dutch and Scandinavian Languages, The Human Rights Program at the University of Minnesota School of Law and The Center for German and European Studies. Centropa: Jewish Heritage in Central and Eastern Europe. Centropa is the signature project of the Central Europe Center for Research and Documentation, a US-based non-profit corporation (Federal Tax ID 58-1970-134) with its general headquarters in Vienna, and its historical review office in Budapest.
It is an international team of historians, filmmakers, web designers, journalists, educators, photographers and Jewish community activists. Their goal is to create a window into Jewish history, and current events, in Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, and Turkey & the Balkans. Demographic and Social Change Program. This research program is a joint initiative of the Echo Survey Institute and the Kansas Population Center. These two institutes support experimental research that investigates the intersection of demographic and social change in post-socialist Eastern Europe.
Herder Institute, Marburg, Germany. Dedicated to the study of East-Central Europe, the Herder Institute’s website now offers access to several important databanks. The documents are all in the original language, but the site is written in an astounding TEN languages. Visitors may choose from German, English, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, or Russian.
Immigration History Reasearch Center, University of Minnesota. Founded in 1965, the Immigration History Research Center preserves and promotes the history of the American immigrant experience. It acts in partnership with various ethnic communities, historical agencies, research specialists, educators, and many others. The IHRC develops and maintains a library and archival collection, provides research assistance, produces publications, and sponsors academic and public programs. English.
