Jacqueline Vansant

Jacqueline Vansant, professor of German studies at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, has focused almost exclusively on Austria in her research. Publications include Against the Horizon: Feminism and Postwar Austrian Women Writers (1988) and Reclaiming ‘Heimat’: Trauma and Mourning in Memoirs of Jewish-Austrian Reemigres (2001). Her article “Robert Wise’s The Sound of Music: The ‘Denazification’ of Austria in American Cinema” grew out of her first visit to the Center in 1994 and marked the beginning of her exploration “Austria: Made in Hollywood.” Vansant has striven to build connections among Austrianists in and across disciplines here and abroad via multiple avenues. This includes her work as co-editor of Modern Austrian Literature with Geoffrey C. Howes (2000-2005), various symposia and panels she has organized, and cooperative projects with Austrian scholars.
