Visiting Teaching Faculty
The Center for Austrian Studies has a long record of bringing distinguished faculty from Austria’s universities to teach at the University of Minnesota, enriching both graduate and undergraduate education at the university. Indeed, Helga Leitner, the very first scholar whose visit we facilitated, has gone on to become a full professor in the university’s renowned Department of Geography. An asterisk denotes visitors who have been part of the Fulbright Visiting Professorship program created in 1991 as a partnership between the Austrian Fulbright Commission, CAS, and the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota.

Doctoral Research Fellowship from the Austrian Federal Ministry for Science and Research (BMWF)
Beginning with the 1992-93 academic year, Austria’s Federal Ministry for Education, Science, and Culture (BMBWK) – now Federal Ministry for Science and Research (BMWF) – began awarding a fellowship to a doctoral student from an Austrian university to come to the University of Minnesota for nine months of research and/or classes. In exchange for a stipend, the student works part time at the Center on projects related to the Center’s programs. Over the years, evolving CAS priorities and the talents and interests of individual recipients have increased the variety of duties and the importance of the CAS/BMWF research fellows. An outstanding group of fellows has created opportunities for themselves and helped the Center accomplish its goals. Past recipients:
