The Austrian Studies Newsletter, an English-language publication appearing continuously since summer 1989, is a clearinghouse for information on scholarly activities and opportunities that includes lively, thought provoking interviews and feature articles offering scholarly perspectives on current events. Starting in 1991, ASN appeared three times annually. In 2004, this changed; a somewhat lengthier ASN is now published twice yearly (spring and fall). It is mailed free of charge to subscribers around the world, and is the only worldwide interdisciplinary publication of its type in English. Its continually growing readership consists of:
The ASN was founded in 1989 under the guidance of Kinley Brauer, then acting director of the Center. Its founding editors were James O. Brown (now Professor of History at Elon College) and Suzanne Sinke (now Professor of History at Florida State University). Since 1992, Daniel Pinkerton has edited the ASN; since fall of 1994, he has done so as a full-time professional editor.
Beginning with Volume 9 (1997), we have archived every Austrian Studies Newsletter online in Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF) format, and will continue to do so. The mixture of feature-length articles, in-depth interviews, and attractive graphics is well-suited to PDF. ASN will look on the screen exactly as it does on the page, and a reasonable copy can be downloaded (although graphics may have a lower resolution, depending on your printer).
If you prefer good old-fashioned hard copy (paper), a subscription is still absolutely free to anyone who asks; we do not even charge for mailing.
